You know what being “born again” is, right? It’s a biblical phrase that refers to the spiritual regeneration of people through the gospel of Jesus. It’s what Jesus said must happen to Nicodemus if he were to be able to see the kingdom of God (John 3:3). It’s what God said He would do to His people in Ezekiel 36:26. It’s what happened to people after Peter’s sermon at Pentecost in Acts 2:37. And it’s what happened to me when I was seven years old in Norfolk, VA on a Wednesday night in April of 1992. Has it happened to you?
Whether or not you’re born again is one of the most important questions you could ever ask. because the answer to the question reveals your eternity. Again, Jesus said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God” (John 3:3).
I don’t write this to cast doubt on genuine Christians. Remember, one tactic of the enemy is to make lost people think they’ve saved and saved people think they’re lost. May the Lord. not let me be used of Satan in that way. However, it is important for us to examine ourselves to see whether or not Christ is in us (2 Corinthians 13:5). It’s also important to be able to recognize marks of someone being born again so that we can better know how to pray for them or to help them take a step closer to Jesus.
Here, then, are six marks of being born again:
- Acknowledgment of sinfulness.
- Growing love of God more than the world.
- Growing practice of righteousness instead of sin.
- Growing love of other Christians as family.
- Faith in Jesus.
- Fruit of the Spirit.
This post starts a series of posts that I will, Lord willing, continually be adding to. Soon I will write about the first mark. Stay tuned for that.
