Reflections on Survey Results

I know this kind of content is not very fun, but it’s important. If you’re interested in this, great! If not, all is well! This will probably be the last time I refer to this survey. 🙂

You all recently filled out a survey about spiritual practices for me. I’m thankful you did! It has been helpful in putting some data on some hunches I’ve had. If you didn’t see the results, you can find a pdf of them here.

Today I’d like to share some observations about the survey results. If you have any feedback or observations, please let me know. I’d love to hear from you!

Signs of Health

There are some very good signs of health in our church! Here’s a list:

  • There’s a good variety in how long people have been members. With the exception of those who’ve joined within the last two years, there is essentially equality between those who’ve been members from 3 all the way to over 30 years. I see that as a good thing.
  • Nearly 80% of the people who responded have been a Christian for over 20 years. That should result in some mature believers at LHBC.
  • Nearly 85% of you give regularly. Praise the Lord!
  • Over 90% of responders say they attend Sunday AM worship at least twice/month. Great!
  • Nearly 75% of responders read God’s Word outside of church at least multiple times each week! Awesome!
  • Nearly 70% of you claim to talk about God and His Word outside of church! Wonderful!
  • Over 80% of you pray multiple times/day. Amazing!
  • Over 70% of responders attend something in addition to a Sunday AM worship service.
  • Over 70% of responders attest to serving in some capacity.
  • Nearly 80% of you report to having a close personal friend outside of your immediate family at LHBC.
  • 75% of people know what the gospel is!

Opportunities for Growth

  • We have had very few people join the church in the last 2 years. Is this due to COVID? Is this due to transition in pastorate?
  • Very few people are part of our church that are new Christians. Are we doing an adequate job reaching out to non-Christians? Are we serving non-Christians and inviting them to read Scripture with us? Do we have any programming focused on evangelism?
  • Fifteen percent of people have an opportunity to start giving or to join our church. Are we in leadership making it easy and clear for new people to get on board?
  • 25% of people only read Scripture once a week or less.
  • Over 30% of people talk about God either weekly or less than weekly.
  • Over 60% of responders either don’t remember the last time they’ve worked on memorizing God’s Word or have not actively done so.
  • There are many people in our lives that are not Christians–we have opportunity for evangelism!
  • Not many responded that we pray with someone else.
  • Life Group participation is at 57%. I’d love to see that percentage increase.
  • About 40% of parents with children or teenagers at home are not doing anything to disciple their children outside of praying before meals. This is a very significant number!
  • Nearly 30% of people only attend Sunday AM services and do not serve in any capacity.

Big Takeaways

As I said earlier, there are some very, very good signs of health at LHBC. At the same time, there are also some areas for growth. In my opinion, my main takeaways from this survey are:

  1. We need to create a clear path for new people to take next steps at our church.
  2. Training men to disciple their families is a significant need. Remember, the responsibility to disciple children lies on fathers, not mothers.
  3. Bible memory and prayer with others is also a significant need.
  4. Sharing the gospel and engaging non-Christians is a significant need.
