Church Family,
Please pray for me as I start to prepare for a new series of sermons starting this Sunday. It will be a break from Colossians for a few weeks and will focus on music–specifically music for the gathered church.
There is a little fear and trepidation in my heart as I broach this subject because of how divisive the topic has been in the (American) Church. Thankfully, I don’t sense any significant animosity within our congregation on this topic. Also, thanks be to God that Jesus is greater than all of our fears. I know He will work among us and help us see if there’s anything we’re doing or not doing that could more faithfully honor Him.
I don’t have a specific number of sermons planned out for this topic. Also, I’m not a huge fan of topical sermons because it’s more difficult to get the authors intent and easier to misuse God’s Word. However, topics can still be addressed from a biblical perspective. It’s not that topical sermons are wrong, it’s just that they are harder to do well. For this reason, and others, it is my aim to mainly preach verse-by-verse expositional application. (That’s a fancy way of saying, go through the Bible, explaining it and applying it.)
In this series, I won’t be addressing all the elements of what should happen as the church gathers. Instead, I’ll just be focusing on the music portion. I’m seeking to answer a question: What does God’s Word say music should be like when a local church gathers?
Please pray that the Holy Spirit would help me and prepare our hearts to speak to us as a church family.
