It is election season–and I’m not talking about the GOP or the DNC. I’m talking about Deacons at LHBC! 🙂
I wanted to let everyone know just how deacons are elected at LHBC. Many of our newer folks don’t know this, and perhaps some of you who are not-so-new don’t know it either. So, here is how it works:
Step 1: Deacon Nominating Committee Begins Process
A nominating committee is formed by the current deacons. It is comprised of myself, two deacons, and two members at large. That team requests a list of all men who are members of our church from the church secretary, Rachel Schmucker. Then they go through the list and nominate who they believe would be good candidates as deacons.
Step 2: Deacon Nominations Finalized
That list of potential nominees is double-checked and given to the deacons to review at the next deacons meeting. The deacons then do the same thing to that list–they review it and nominate the men from the list that they believe would be good candidates.
The deacons then volunteer to ask the men on the list if they will consider serving as deacons for the upcoming term. (It is a 3-year commitment.) Each deacon has 1 or a few men they volunteer to ask. They are given a letter from the chairman that lays out the stipulations and expectations of what it means to be a deacon. The deacons agree on a due date for when they need to know a nominee’s willingness.
This year, we have four men coming off the board. Three are coming off because of term limits and are eligible to be re-elected. One is coming off because he is moving.
Step 3: Congregational Vote
On Sunday, November 17, a flier will be made available to everyone that contains pictures and short biographies of the men nominated as deacons. We will also send that flier as a pdf through “The Weekly” on November 20. On December 1, all members will be able to vote online for four (4) men to serve as deacons.
We don’t yet know how many nominees there will be. There could be 4, or there could be 8. But members will only vote for four men. The four men who receive the most votes will serve as deacons for 2025.
Transparency breeds trust, and everyone needs to know how these things happen so there’s no question. I’m thankful for a church family who takes these matters seriously, and I’m thankful for godly men who are willing to go above and beyond to serve Lake Hills in various ways as deacons.
If anyone has a question, you are welcome to reach out to Deacon Chairman Judson Schmucker, Secretary Neal Ballah, or any other Deacon (we currently do not have a Vice-Chairman until the new term begins in January). Their information can be found on Breeze or in the printed directory.
Thank you for praying for the men being nominated and for the Lord’s will to be done, and thank you for being a wonderful church family.
