What Does the Bible Say About Pride?

June is Pride Month in the United States. Here’s what the Library of Congress says about Pride Month. President Biden, not surprisingly, has issued a presidential declaration about Pride month.

In case you’re not aware, Pride Month is a month in which our culture says we are to celebrate everything about the LGBTQ+ movement.

My point, church family, in posting about this is not to give all the Bible’s teachings against homosexual behavior (which it clearly condemns). Instead, I want to focus on what God’s Word says about pride itself. Does God’s Word teach that having pride is a good thing? The answer is no.

Here are a few verses about pride:

Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for ‘God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.’ Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you.

1 Peter 5:5-6

What does God do with prideful people? He opposes them. If we want to be exalted by God, we should not be prideful. We should be humble.

Haughty eyes and a proud heart, the lamp of the wicked, are sin.

Proverbs 21:4

For the Lord of hosts has a day against all that is proud and lofty, against all that is lifted up—and it shall be brought low;

Isaiah 2:12

The Lord preserves the faithful but abundantly repays the one who acts in pride.

Psalm 31:23

Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.

Proverbs 16:18

“Pride” and “Proud” Usages

Of the 51 times the word “pride” is used in the Bible (ESV), only 2 are used in a positive way. Of the 43 times the word “proud” is used in the Bible (ESV), only 2 are used positively. If you look at percentages, 95% of the time the word “pride” or “proud” is used in the Bible it’s used negatively.

Pride Month? Even if Pride Month encouraged people to be prideful about something that wasn’t blatant sin, it would still be a bad idea.

God opposes the proud, but He gives grace to the humble. That’s where I want to be.
